Dental Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are restorations used to repair teeth with mild to moderate damage. From a dental lab’s perspective, there is no difference between inlays and onlays in terms of production process or considerations; the only distinction lies in the coverage area.

Dental inlays and onlays allow your clinic’s patients to preserve more of their natural tooth structure. They are strong and durable, helping to protect the teeth from further damage.

Dental Inlays and Onlays Lab

Istar is a well-established dental lab that can help your patients customize perfectly shaped and fitted inlays and onlays. During the glazing stage, our dental technicians carefully compare the restorations with the tooth shade you provide, ensuring that the inlays and onlays look more natural and aesthetically pleasing.

Dental Inlays and Onlays By Material

At Istar Dental Laboratory, you can customize inlays and onlays for your patients in various materials, including Zirconia, Composite, Emax, and Metal.

How Istar Creates Inlays and Onlays?

Once Istar Dental Lab receives your cases, we will assign technicians to begin crafting the inlays and onlays. Like with other dental restorations, after each production step is completed, a dedicated technician will review the work to ensure there are no issues.

Design and Milling

For digital cases, once we receive your digital impressions for inlays and onlays, our digital designers will use CAD software to design the tooth shape and other details. After the design is completed, it is transferred to the milling machine, where the material you selected is added, and the milling process begins.

Polishing and Sintering

Once the shape of the inlays and onlays is milled, our technicians begin polishing and refining them to ensure a perfect fit. They are then placed into the porcelain furnace for the first sintering process.

Glazing and Try-in

After sintering is complete, the technicians will apply glazing to the inlays and onlays, a process that involves repeatedly matching the color. Once glazed, they will be sent for the second sintering process to enhance their luster and appearance.

FAQs

It’s simple! Contact Istar Dental Lab and send us the traditional or digital impressions you’ve taken for your patients, and we will immediately start customizing the restorations for you!

The main difference is the material used. Fillings typically use composite resin, which is directly placed into the damaged tooth. This method is faster and cheaper but more prone to damage and discoloration.

In contrast, dental inlays are made from durable restorative materials and undergo polishing, grinding, and other steps, offering better aesthetics and a longer lifespan.

Dental onlays are used for mild to moderate tooth damage and do not require dentists to remove more of the natural tooth structure. Crowns, on the other hand, are for severe or extensive tooth damage, requiring the dentist to grind down the tooth to create space for the crown.

The lifespan of dental inlays and onlays depends on the materials used and the patient’s lifestyle habits.

  • Ceramic inlays/onlays typically last 12-15 years.
  • Metal inlays/onlays can last over 15 years.
  • Resin inlays/onlays last around 7-10 years.
